After arriving at the school yard, the monk drew a circle on the ground.
"Stay inside this circle and do not leave it, whatever you might see or hear," warned the old monk in Japanese before he started chanting a Buddhist spell whilst walking around the circle. "I have drawn a kekkai, which will protect you from the yōkai. As long as you are inside it, the yōkai cannot do anything to you."
After making sure that Shaun, Jeffrey and Blythe were all safely inside his kekkai, the old monk took out a small foldable table, on top of which he placed some incense. Then, drawing a Buddhist symbol on the floor, he placed a doll and some toys in the center. After lighting the incense, he began to chant a spell in order to summon the fetus ghost.
The instant the incense started burning, the detectives could sense the atmosphere around them changing, abruptly becoming chill and vibrant with rich tension. Suddenly, a gust of ghostly wind blew in their direction, picking up bits of fallen leaves on its way, as if toying with them.
"It's coming," whispered Shaun as he sensed the fearful suspense of something approaching them.
All this time, the monk never stopped chanting the spell under his breath. The closer the yōkai approached, the louder he chanted. As it approached, the yōkai encircled the doll, as if extremely reluctant to possess it. The monk chanted even louder, almost shouting in his booming voice.
Suddenly, they perceived the figure of Tiffany appearing in front of them.
"Ahhhh! Jeffie, help me!" exclaimed Tiffany as she let out a shrill scream. "I feel so painful, make him stop chanting!" She continued to scream pitifully as she clutched herself whilst fire appeared to be burning her body. "Help me, Jeffie!"
"No, Jeff, don't believe this! She's not re......." Before Shaun could finish his sentence, Jeffrey had already stepped out of the kekkai, dashing towards the figure of Tiffany.
The instant Jeffrey left the kekkai, Tiffany's figure shattered into a thousand pieces. Only then did Jeffrey realize that he had been tricked and it was all but a mirage created by the cunning yōkai to trick him out of the safe zone. Nevertheless, it was all too late. The ghostly wind blew towards Jeffrey, who turned around and tried to run back to the kekkai. However, before Jeffrey could reach it, the ghostly wind struck him from behind, causing him to fall face forward. When Jeffrey looked up again, his face had turned into a ghastly white and his eyes became bloodshot. Oh no! He has been possessed!
"Quick, hold him down whilst I continue chanting the spell," exclaimed the old monk. "If your friend is not held down, I am afraid the yōkai would start harming him."
Therefore, Shaun left the kekkai and used all his might to hold Jeffrey's body down on the ground before he could stand up again. Despite being a few inches taller than Jeffrey, Shaun struggled to pin down his friend, as the yōkai's power seemed too great.
To help the monk, Blythe also joined in the chanting. Can they successfully force the yōkai out of Jeffrey's body?
