"Driving home on the deafeningly noiseless road, the feeble ray of my headlight was alive with dust as it chased away layers of darkness. Overhead, the
sky was half crystalline, half misty, and the atmosphere was chill and vibrant
with rich tension. High above, ringed all about with a sickly yellow glare, the
sinking moon struggled in vain to escape from a pursuing cloud.
"Abruptly, my car mutinied, forcing me to exit and
examine it; the icy wind bit into my bare cheeks and the darkness, as thick as velvet, engulfed
the surroundings, suffocating me. Anonymous and malevolent, a force compelled me
to bend down and glimpse beneath my car.
"By luck, if it was indeed luck, a white box perched there, as if awaiting
me to pick it up. Impatiently, with quivering hands, I opened it and lying there almost eagerly to be discovered was a golden necklace
with a dangling red ruby, a watchful eye with a penetrating stare; like a
lonely child who was eager for company, luring me into its merciless grasp.
"Authoritative and avaricious, a rapid desire overcame
me to gain possession of the necklace, in order to protect it from malicious
hands. Nonetheless, the desire soon faded, leaving me with a perfect excuse of
taking it home, in fear of it being blanketed by the potential overnight snow and be
lost forever to its rightful owner.
"Exhausted, I was just retiring to bed when the sound
of the doorbell stomped upstairs and slapped all my fatigue away. Dragging my cumbersome
feet downstairs, I opened the door and was astonished to see a benign, old lady apologising for the lateness of her call and claiming to be the owner of the necklace.
