The afternoon of the group of friends was spent entirely at the beach. Eliza and Tiffany lay cozily under the pleasant sunshine whilst Shaun swam in the warm sea water. Despite the beach being exceedingly crowded at that time of the day, they were fortunate enough to find a quiet spot where they could tan themselves and chat at the same time. Jeffrey, on the other hand, was sitting on a deckchair, drinking a cocktail and rereading one of his favourite novels – Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet.
Having rented a surfing board from the hotel reception, Claire was busily employed in practising her surfing skills, which she had learnt from her friend Nadia a few years ago.
Having passed a jubilant afternoon at the beach, the group of friends decided that it was about time to return to their rooms. As they entered the hotel from the entrance, they walked past a coconut tree. Suddenly, Tiffany noticed a piece of paper stuck on the branch.
"Hey, what's this!?" exclaimed Tiffany. Immediately, Shaun recognised that it was not just any ordinary piece of paper, but a Taoist magic charm written with a rooster's blood, used to fend off evil spirits. Nevertheless, it was all too late. Before Shaun could stop Tiffany, as fast as lightning, the latter had ripped the magic charm off the tree branch and the charm immediately dissolved into ashes in front of their eyes.
"Tiffany, you shouldn't have ripped that off!" exclaimed Shaun. "It was supposed to be a magic charm and I am sure it wasn't there for no reason!"
"Whatever! Who cares about a silly piece of old paper, anyways? Stop overreacting, okay?" retorted Tiffany, shrugging. "Argh, I'm starving! C'mon Jeffie, let's go grab some food at the buffet!"
"Let's hope that I was wrong," pondered Shaun as they entered the hotel. "Perhaps that magic charm just happened to be there for no particular reason. Nonetheless, my instinct me tells me otherwise."
