After Mai moved back to live with her parents, strange things began to occur in the apartment. Firstly, Mai's father fell down the stairs and injured his leg.
Then, Mai's mother fell into a consumptive illness, and became bedridden and weaker by the day. The only people that seemed to be completely unaffected were Mai, Mai's brother Thanh and Mai's baby daughter Lan.
Only after several incidents did Mai's father begin to suspect that something was amiss in the house. He paid a Taoist priest from Chinatown to come and inspect their apartment. After a thorough inspection of the small apartment, the priest traced the repellent force to a white urn.
"Sir, an evil spirit has possessed this white urn and is currently haunting your apartment. Only after some stern questioning from her father did Mai confess the origin of this mysterious artifact. In fact, after receiving news of her husband's death, Mai dug up Hung's corpse which had been buried in the backyard. Then, she burnt the body, collected up the ashes and stored them in the urn.
"Why would you do this?" enquired Mai's father angrily. "Hung must have somehow learned that it was your mother and I who had tried to break you apart before his death and is now seeking revenge upon the two of us. If we do not get rid of him, your mother will die soon!"
"But, father, I love Hung too much, I cannot bear to part with him again!" replied Mai as she began to cry. Even her baby daughter Lan seemed to be able to comprehend her grandfather's words, began to wail deafeningly in her cot.
What should they do?
