Chrysanthemum on the Cliff-12 (Final Ending)

Time flies, day after day, in a blink of an eye, one month had passed. It was a sunny morning, Gerald went out to pick some flowers for his mother, in order to cheer her up.

Strolling and skipping jubilantly down a long, brick path until he got to a steep cliff, Gerald perceived some chrysanthemums waving gently in the wind as if saying hello to him on the cliff edge.

Just when Gerald bent down in order to pick it up, he suddenly slipped and lost his balance.

Down and down, closer and closer to the ground he fell; when suddenly, warm hand grabbed his arm and hauled him back up to the cliff.

"Are you all right? Are you hurt?" The man who had rescued Gerald inquired sympathetically.

"Yes, I’m all right. Thank you so much for your kind rescue,” Panting heavily for breath, Gerald thanked the man gratefully

When Gerald raised his head, he was astonished to discover the man, with bandages on his head, arm and foot, who was kneeling down in front of him was his father!

"Papa, is that you? I must be dreaming!" Gerald exclaimed with joy and amazement.

"Papa? Why did you call me papa?" the bewildered man replied.

“Don’t you remember me? I’m your only son- Gerald Anderson!” Gerald quickly explained.

“I couldn't remember anything after waking up in the hospital.” the man replied, doing his best to probe his memory.

“Do you remember a song that you always sang to me when I was little?” Gerald sang the song to him again and again.

Suddenly, a drop of tear rolled down his cheek and he said, “Gerald, I miss you so much! Where is your mama? What are you doing here?”

Gerald was so relieved that his father eventually remembered and continued to explain. "We had been informed that you died during the war." Gerald mumbled sadly, "Mama has gone insane due to sorrow."

“I’m extremely fortunate. I remembered that whilst we entered a cave, a bomb exploded, and I was the last one to enter. I banged my head on a rock; then, I woke up in the hospital, unable to remember anything. Gerald's father recounted with a boyish grin on his face.

Chatting and strolling home merrily like old times, Gerald took his father by the hand to inform his mum of the fortunate newsMrs. Anderson immediately recognised her husband and dashed  towards his embrace

Three years later, the war had eventually ended. Gerald and his parents moved back to their old home in London. This family was extremely fortunate, and one of the very few complete families that had survived the devastating war.

In 2015, seventy years after the war had ended, Gerald recounted this story to his granddaughter.

"And did they live happily ever after like in the fairy tales?" Annie inquired.

"Yes, yes, they did," Gerald, who by now was eighty-four years old, replied whilst displaying a beam on his wrinkled face.
