Le groupe d'amis retournèrent à Taipei le lendemain et arrivèrent juste à temps pour le déjeuner. Comme ils avaient tous mangé trop de nourriture de rue dans les marchés nocturnes de Kaohsiung la veille, ils avaient seulement envie de déjeuner léger. Ainsi, la grand-mère de Blythe proposa de leur faire cuire de simples plats maison taïwanais, dont ils étaient très reconnaissants, avec Blythe et Claire offrant leur aide.

Alors qu'ils étaient appelés à la table à manger, Jeffrey a été étonné de découvrir qu'il y avait de délicieux Xiaolongbao, du riz frit au jambon et aux œufs et des sandwichs taïwanaise.

"Wow! Comment avez-vous préparé autant de nourriture en seulement une demi-heure?" s'exclama Jeffrey avec étonnement.

The group of friends headed back to Taipei on the following day and arrived just in time for lunch. As they had all eaten too much street food in the night markets in Kaohsiung on the previous day, they only felt like having a light lunch. Thus, Blythe's grandma offered to cook them some simple home dishes, of which they were very grateful, with Blythe and Claire offering to help.

As they were called to the dining table, Jeffrey was astonished to discover that there was delicious Xiaolongbao, ham and egg fried rice, and Taiwanese style sandwiches.

"Wow! How on Earth did you guys prepare so much food in half an hour?" exclaimed Jeffrey in astonishment.

花子死後，她想要回家的強大願力使她無法升天。她的怨念使她的靈魂化身為怨靈，附身於花子剛到日本時，將軍找畫家幫她畫的那幅卷軸畫上。花子去世不久，怪事就接二連三的發生在將軍府邸。先是雪子和秋子得了一場怪病，再來是開始沈迷於賭博的將軍被拔除了軍位後宣布破產。整個將軍府的東西都被變賣以還將軍賭博欠的債，其中當然也包含了花子的畫像，它被賣給了一位富商。

然而，不幸似乎是那幅卷軸畫招來的，因爲它去到哪兒，災禍就跟到哪兒，其歷任的主人都莫名死亡。大家便開始傳説那幅畫被下了可怕的詛咒。很巧的是，那幅畫經過了多次的轉手，最終落入了一位年輕的臺灣商人手裏，他專門買日本貨進到台灣賣。於是，花子的畫像也就這樣上了開往台北的船。

Après plusieurs semaines de délire allongé dans son lit, Hanako mourut dans sa chambre, avec Asa à côté de son lit. C'était une mort lente et douloureuse. Lentement, petit à petit, Hanako sentit que son espoir se consumait en elle, surtout après avoir entendu Asa dire que le général avait complètement douté de son innocence.

Après sa mort, animée par une puissante volonté de rentrer chez elle, l'esprit de Hanako ne pouvait pas aller au paradis. Au lieu de cela, elle s'est transformé en un esprit maléfique qui possédait le portrait qui avait servi de cadeau de mariage. Peu de temps après la mort de Hanako, des incidents bizarres commencèrent à se produire dans la maison du général. Tout d'abord, Yukiko et Akiko tombèrent dans une étrange maladie, puis le général, devenu accro au jeu, perdit son poste dans l'armée et, à son tour, a fait faillite. Tout dans sa maison a été vendu en échange des frais de subsistance, y compris le portrait de Hanako, qui a été acheté par un riche commerçant.

Néanmoins, les malheurs semblaient avoir suivi le portrait partout où il allait, entraînant la mort mystérieuse de ses propriétaires. Ainsi, il y avait des rumeurs selon lesquelles le portrait était maudit. Comme par chance, après plusieurs années d'achat et de vente, le portrait a finalement été acheté par un jeune marchand taïwanais, spécialisé dans la vente de produits japonais à Taïwan. Par conséquent, le portrait de Hanako a été placé à bord d'un navire, mettant le cap sur Taipei.

After several weeks of lying deliriously in bed, Hanako died in her bedroom, with Asa beside her bed. It was a slow and painful death. Slowly, bit by bit, Hanako felt that her hope was consumed from within her, especially after hearing from Asa that the General had completely doubted her innocence.

After she died, driven by a powerful will to return to her home, Hanako's spirit did not go to heaven. Instead, it tranformed into a an evil spirit which possessed the portrait that had acted as her wedding gift. Soon after Hanako's death, bizarre mishaps commenced to occur throughout the General's household. Firstly, Yukiko and Akiko fell into a strange illness and then, the General, who got addicted to gambling, lost his position in the army and, in turn, went bankrupt. Everything in his household were sold in exchange for living expenses, including Hanako's portrait, which was bought by a wealthy merchant.

Nevertheless, misfortunes seemed to have followed the portrait everywhere it went, resulting in mysterious deaths of its owners. Thus, there were rumours that the portrait was cursed. As if by luck, after many years of being bought and sold, the portrait was eventually bought by a young Taiwanese merchant, who majored in selling Japanese goods in Taiwan. Therefore, Hanako's portrait was put on board a ship, setting sail for Taipei.

雪子求救後，僕人立刻趕了過來，將花子抬到牀上。因爲跌了那一跤，花子流產了，她的身體也愈來愈虛弱。連續好幾天，她都發著高燒、臥病不起。就連醫生來看過花子後，都無法診斷出病因；只有花子自己最清楚，她得的病是絕望而引起的。懷孕後，花子也變得不像之前那麼的悶悶不樂，心中也燃起了希望 ；她並非盼望能夠母憑子貴，而是她的孩子給了她活下去的動力，因爲她已不再是孤零零的一人。

生病初期，將軍時常造訪花子的房間來看她。然而，當她的病情不但没有好轉，反而持續惡化，將軍便愈來愈少來探病，只留下可憐的花子獨自一人在房間想著自己短暫的一生。一起小事件使得將軍從此未再踏入花子的房間半步～那就是有天，將軍經過了廚房，聽到了老廚娘和女僕之間的對話。

Après que Yukiko ait appelé à l'aide, les domestiques arrivèrent immédiatement et portèrent Hanako sur son lit. En raison de la chute, Hanako fit une fausse couche et, par conséquent, sa santé se détériora rapidement. Pendant plusieurs jours après sa fausse couche, Hanako avait une forte fièvre et était souvent délirante. Même après l'arrivée du médecin, il ne pouvait pas identifier la cause de son délire. Seulement Hanako savait elle-même en raison de sa tristesse et de son désespoir. Plusieurs semaines après son arrivée au Japon, Hanako s'est reconnue enceinte et elle devint moins mélancolique. Non pas parce qu'elle s'attendait l'héritier du général et pour augmenter son statut dans le ménage, mais pour Hanako, son enfant était son espoir et sa motivation pour rester en vie, car elle sentait qu'elle n'était plus seule sur cette terre étrangère.

Au début de sa maladie, le général venait souvent dans sa chambre pour elle rendre visite. Néanmoins, au fil des jours et sa santé ne semble pas s'être améliorée, mais s'est plutôt détériorée, les visites du général devinrent moins fréquentes et Hanako était souvent laissée seule dans sa chambre pendant des heures, contemplant sa vie.

Un incident minuscule mais hautement significatif conduisit à la fin complète des visites du général. Un jour, alors que le général passait devant la cuisine, il entendit une conversation entre deux femmes de chambre.

"Ne penses-tu pas que Hanako-sama est un peu méfiante?" dit une vieille femme de chambre nommée Chouko.

After Yukiko has called for help, the servants immediately arrived and carried Hanako onto her bed. Due to the fall, Hanako had a miscarriage and as a consequence, her health rapidly deteriorated. For many days after her miscarriage, Hanako had high fever and was often delirious. Even after the doctor came, he was unable to work out the cause of her delirium, which only Hanako herself knew to be due to her sadness and hopelessness. Several weeks after she arrived in Japan, Hanako acknowledged herself to be pregnant and she became less melancholy. Not because her expected to bear the General's heir and increase her status in the household, but for Hanako, her child was her hope and motivation to stay alive, because she felt that she was no longer alone in this foreign land. 

At the beginning of her illness, the General often came to her room to visit her. Nevertheless, as the days go by and her health did not seem to have improved, but instead has worsened, the General's visits became less frequent and Hanako was often left alone in her room for hours, contemplating her life.

「你知道將軍大人爲何會納妳為妾嗎？」阿朝一天早上在廚房裏工作，準備午飯時詢問在一旁幫忙的花子說。

「不知道！」花子答道。

「你難道覺得是因爲他眞心愛你嗎？」阿朝說。「當然不是囉！因爲他希望你會幫他生一個兒子，以後可以繼承他。因爲雪子和秋子都生不出兒子！」

「可是我並不愛他啊！」花子回答說。「我在臺灣本來已經準備嫁給我的青梅竹馬，是將軍逼迫我父親要我和他結婚的！」

「愛情在這個世上根本一文不値，」阿朝冷冷地答道。「現在唯一能讓妳爬上較高的地位就是給將軍生一個兒子。這是妳生存的唯一辦法，老了後纔有好日子過。不然，妳很快就會被那兩個心狠手辣的女人想辦法趕出去的。現在將軍還活著時，他可能會留你；可一旦他去世了，他的繼承者一定會將你逐出家門，除非他是你的親生兒子。」

「那阿朝，你怎麼辦呢？你對我這麼好，會不會連累到你啊？」花子問道。「你是我在這兒最好的朋友，往後若我有好日子過，絕對不會忘了你的！」

「謝謝妳，妳眞善良！」阿朝溫柔地說。「可是，想我這種低下階層的人，是永遠不可能有好日子過的。」

"Sais-tu pourquoi le général te voulait comme concubine?" interrogea Asa à Hanako un matin alors qu'elles travaillaient dans la cuisine, préparant le déjeuner.

"Non, je n'en ai aucune idée", répondit la belle fille taïwanaise.

"Penses-tu que c'est parce qu'il t'aime?" demanda Asa. "Bien sûr que non! C'est parce qu'il s'attend à ce que tu donneras naissance à un fils, qui pourra plus tard être son héritier. Comme ni Yukiko-sama ni Akiko-sama n'ont la capacité de porter son héritier."

"Mais je ne l'aime pas du tout", répondit Hanako. "J'étais sur le point de me marier à Taïwan avec mon amour d'enfance quand il m'a forcé à venir au Japon avec lui."

"L'amour est inutile dans ce monde", répondit froidement Asa. "La seule façon de gravir les échelons sociaux pour toi est de donner naissance au futur héritier du général. C'est le seul moyen de survivre et peut-être de mener une vie heureuse quand tu seras vieux. Sinon, lorsque le général mourra, son héritier peut t'expulser de la maison à tout moment, car tu n'es qu'une concubine, pas sa vraie mère."

"Mais, et toi, Asa?" questionna la fille sympa taïwanaise. "Tu es ma meilleure amie ici, je ne mènerai pas une vie heureuse sans toi de mon côté."

"Merci pour ton offre, c'est très généreux de ton part", répondit Asa en souriant doucement. "Mais, les gens de la classe inférieure comme moi n'ont même aucune chance de gravir les échelons sociaux."

"Do you know why the General wanted you as his concubine?" questioned Asa to Hanako one morning as they were working in the kitchen, preparing luncheon.

"No, I have no idea," answered Hanako.

"Do you think it's because he loves you?" asked Asa. "Of course not! It's because he's expecting you to give birth to a son, who can later be his heir. As neither Yukiko-sama nor Akiko-sama has the ability to bear his heir."

"But I don't love him at all," replied Hanako. "I was about to get married in Taiwan with my childhood sweetheart when he forced me to come to Japan with him."

"Love is useless in this world," answered Asa coolly. "The only way to climb up the social ladder for you is to give birth to the General's future heir. That is the only way to survive and possibly lead a happy life when you get old. Otherwise, when the General dies, his heir can kick you out of his household any time, as you are only a concubine, not his real mother."

"But, what about you, Asa?" questioned Hanako. "You are my best friend here, I won't lead a happy life without you on my side."

"Thanks for your offer, that's very generous of you," responded Asa as she smiled gently. "But, low-class people like me don't even stand a chance of climbing up the social ladder."

在海上數日後，阿花終於抵達了日本。下船後，將軍帶著阿花回家認識他的家人，其中包含了他的妻子～雪子、與小妾～秋子，兩人皆是日本人。她們嫉妒阿花的美貌，卻又不敢在丈夫面前顯露，於是臉上掛著虛偽的笑容，假裝親切地詢問阿花的名字。

不懂日文的阿花聽得一頭霧水，直到將軍寫出日文漢字，阿花才理解，並也寫出自己的名字。「花，」阿花指著自己的名字用著閩南語說。雪子與秋子在一旁譏笑著阿花不會說日文，並私底下叫她『馬鹿』，也就是日文『笨蛋』的意思。

將軍用日語說：「從現在開始，妳的名字就叫花子，聽懂了嗎？」

花子左等右等，卻一直没等到自己婚禮的日子。原來，因爲她只是將軍的側室，並非其正宮，因此不配擁有婚禮。將軍找了一名畫家，幫花子畫了一幅畫像，掛在她的房間作為兩人成婚之禮。

Après d'innombrables jours sur la mer tumultueuse, Ahuey arriva finalement au pays du soleil levant. Immédiatement après avoir descendu le navire, le général ramena la belle fille taïwanaise chez lui et la présenta à sa famille, qui était composée de sa femme, Yukiko, et d'une concubine, Akiko, qui étaient toutes deux japonaise. Jaloux de la beauté d'Ahuey, elles regardaient la pauvre fille taïwanaise avec dédain et méchanceté, mais n'osaient pas montrer de malveillance devant leur mari, alors elles demandèrent le nom d'Ahuey avec un faux sourire sur leurs visages, qui étaient couverts de lourdes couches de maquillage.

Ahuey, qui ne parlait pas japonais, ne comprenait pas un seul mot. Ce n'était que lorsque le général écrit le kanji japonais représentant le mot pour «nom», qui ressemblait aux caractères chinois de la même signification, qu'Ahuey écrit son nom en réponse.

"Ahuey", déclara la jeune fille en désignant le personnage indiquant son nom. Yukiko et Akiko ricanèrent à son faible niveau de compétence en japonais, après quoi elles la surnommèrent secrètement «la fille muette».

"Hana", déclara le Général en prononçant le caractère chinois comme Kanji japonais. "A partir de maintenant, ton nom sera Hanako." Le général répéta son nom et désigna Ahuey pour qu'elle comprenne.

Le jour du mariage d'Ahuey (désormais Hanako) n'est jamais venu. Comme elle n'était qu'une simple concubine, au lieu de l'épouse légale du général, elle ne pouvait donc pas avoir de mariage officiel. Tout ce qu'elle reçut en guise de cadeau de mariage était un portrait d'elle dessinée par un artiste.

After countless days on the tempestuous sea, Ahuey finally arrived at the Land of the Rising Sun. Immediately after they alighted the ship, the General took Ahuey home and introduced her to his family, which consisted of his wife, Yukiko, and a concubine, Akiko, who were both Japanese. Jealous of Ahuey's beauty, they eyed the poor girl with disdain and malice, but dared not show malevolence in front of their husband, so they asked for Ahuey's name with a fake smile on their faces, which were covered with heavy layers of makeup.

Ahuey, who could not speak Japanese, did not understand a single word. Only until the General wrote out the Japanese Kanji representing the word for 'name', which resembled the Chinese characters of the same meaning did Ahuey write down her name in response.

"Ahuey," said the girl, as she pointed at the character indicating her name. Yukiko and Akiko snickered at her low level of proficiency in Japanese, after which they secretly nicknamed her 'the dumb girl'.

"Hana," said the General as he pronounced the Chinese character as Japanese Kanji. "From now on, your name will be Hanako." The General repeated her name and pointed at Ahuey so she could understand.

Ahuey (thenceforth Hanako)'s wedding day never came. As she was but a mere concubine, instead of the General's legal wife, thus she could not have a formal wedding. All she received as a form of a wedding gift was a portrait of her drawn by an artist, which was hung in her tiny bedroom.
