Shaun and Jeffrey were playing tennis in the hotel, which they stayed in the North of England for holiday.
孝恩和傑佛瑞在一間位在北英格蘭的旅館裏的體育館裏打網球。
When they finished from the gym and passed the lobby, they couldn't help but overheard a conversation of the hotel owner and another guest.
當他們打完球從體育館要回房間時，經過旅館大廳，偶然聽到了旅館的主人和一位客人在聊天。
"I've heard that the place is haunted......" the guest said.
「我聽說那裡鬧鬼.......」客人說。
"Yes, indeed, I am afraid that it's quite true," Mr Bruce, the hotel owner replied, but only after he has glanced around and lowered his voice, as if afraid of someone or something overhearing, "I have heard of a legend that says it is haunted with a witch's ghost."
「是呀，你聽到的恐怕無誤。」布魯斯先生先東張西望了一下後，再壓低聲音回答道，彷彿害怕被誰聽見一樣。「我聽過一個傳說，那裡住著一個巫女的鬼魂。」
"A witch's ghost?"
「巫女的鬼魂？」
"Indeed, legend has it that she was a witch from the Middle Ages," Mr Bruce responded, "And when it was found out, she was thrown into a well, which is still in that place. After her death, she couldn't bear to separate with her lover, therefore, her ghost still roams in search for her lover..........."
「是呀，傳說她曾是中古世紀的巫女。」布魯斯先生繼續說。「但後來她被發現了以後，就被投了現在還在那塊地的井裏。她死後，因爲無法忍受和愛人分離，所以至今還在人間尋找著她的愛人.........」
There was a long and agonising silence after Mr Bruce had finished, then he continued, "Of course, that is just a legend, and a legend is after all, a legend, and one cannot completely believe it until one has encountered it for themselves. And that is why I believe in it......"
一陣寧靜後，他繼續說：「當然啦，傳說僅止於傳說，一般人是不會相信的，直到自己遇到了。我本來也是不相信的.........」
"Have you seen the ghost yourself?" the guest inquired with an astonished expression.
「你遇到鬼魂了嗎？」那個客人臉上露出吃驚的表情問道。
"Yes, indeed, I have," Mr Bruce said, "I have seen strange things happen around that area."
「是的。」布魯斯先生答道。「我看過詭異的事情在那一帶發生。」
Suddenly, the guests phone rang, and after excusing himself from Mr Bruce, left to answer the call.
突然，那個客人的手機響了，他跟布魯斯先生說一聲後便趕緊離開去接電話了。
Shaun, who did not at all believe a single word of the owner, on seeing the guests' departure, approached Mr Bruce.
在一旁聽著，並絲毫不相信布魯斯先生的話的孝恩看見那個客人離開後，便走向布魯斯先生。
"Hello! I am sorry to have overheard your conversation just now," Shaun apologised, "But me and my friend here are extremely fascinated by your words, and are curious to know more. Would you mind recounting your supernatural encounter to us? What strange things did you see exactly around that haunted area?"
「您好呀！很抱歉，我不是故意偷聽你們講話的。」孝恩說。「但是，我和我的朋友都對您剛剛所說的事情非常感興趣。您能描述一下您看到了什麼嗎？」
Mr Bruce, quite taken aback by Shaun's frankness, replied, "Of course not! It's my pleasure. At first, I, and maybe like yourselves now, thought that the legend was absolutely ridiculous. It was not until a few days ago when I passed the place that I became completely convinced. It was a dark night, I was visiting a friend that lived in the other village, and there was no way I could get there without passing that place. I have been there many times before and seen that it was quite deserted, with weather-worn houses and broken buildings. But, that night, I discovered that it was full of people, however, not just ordinary people, but people dressed in Medieval-style clothes, when I walked closer, I saw a ghost-like figure on the well, which the witch was said to have drowned in, then, I blanked out. I was found lying on the ground on the next morning by my friend, who was expecting my arrival, and on seeing my absence, came out to find me. And, mind you, I just found out that it doesn't just occur at night, but even in bright daylight! So, please be safe and do not go anywhere near there."
布魯斯先生被孝恩的誠實嚇了一跳，回答說：「當然可以呀！那是我的榮幸。起初，我也可能跟現在的你們一樣，覺得那個傳說跟本就是無稽之談。是到了幾天前，我經過了那個地方後，我纔完全相信的。那是一個黑暗的夜晚，我要去找住在另一個村莊的朋友，途中必經那個鬧鬼的地點。我之前也經過那裡好幾次，都看見那兒跟本就是個廢墟，建築物都已殘破不堪。然而，那天晚上，我竟然發現那裡都是人，但是，不是普通的人，因爲他們都穿著中古世紀的衣服。當我走近一看，我看到了一個像鬼魂一樣的靈體坐在巫女淹死的井上，我當場昏了過去。是到了隔天早上，我朋友等我等了一整個晚上都没看到人，纔出來找我的。他看到我時，我躺在地上。而且我還聽說不只晚上會遇到這樣的事情，就連大白天也會。所以，爲了安全起見，你們倆還是別靠近那裡來得好。」
Shaun then inquired the location, promised that he'll try to avoid the place, then went back with Jeffrey to their hotel room.
孝恩詢問了地點，並保證他會試圖避開那裡後，和傑佛瑞回到了旅館的房間。
Looks like they've got another mysterious case on their hands!
看來，他們又遇到了詭異的案子了呢！
