 Opening the trapdoor with one hand and pulling Mai's hair with the other, Bob descended the ladder into the cellar whilst dragging Mai behind him and they arrived at a cell with a metal door and a lock. Before Mai could come to her senses, Bob pushed her into the cell and locked the metal door behind her. 

After falling on the cold, stone floor of the cellar, Mai quickly got up and dashed to the metal door. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she said as she sobbed violently, using her eyes to beg her husband to let her out. 

"That'll teach ya how to be a good wife, dammit!" sneered Bob as he ascended the ladder and closed the trapdoor behind him, leaving Mai in complete darkness. Suddenly, she heard the scurrying feet of rats behind her.

阿梅看到鮑伯臉上掛著邪惡的笑容，並緩緩逼近自己後，下意識地往後退了幾步。突然，鮑伯撲到阿梅身上，並一把抓起了她烏黑的頭髮。這時，阿梅才意識到鮑伯的意圖，並奮力抗爭。然而，柔弱的阿梅完全不是強壯的鮑伯的對手，順利讓他得成了。結束後，鮑伯留下坐在在地上啜泣的阿梅，並拿起了車鑰匙。

「哼，我去麥當勞吃漢堡都比這個女的煮得好吃！」鮑伯用力地將大門踢開說。「XX的，亞洲人不是都應該很會燒菜嗎？」

 Petrified, Mai backed up but Bob continued to advance towards her with that sinister smile on his sunburnt face whilst saying things that Mai could not understand. Without warning, Bob pranced on Mai and grabbed her hair. Suddenly, Mai understood what Bob wanted and tried to resist. Nevertheless, due to Bob's occupation as a construction worker, he was relatively strong for his age, so Mai was unable to push him away. After he was done, Bob left Mai on the floor sobbing uncontrollably whilst he grabbed his car keys from the dining table. 

"Better get some burgers at McDonald's than eating this woman's cooking," mumbled Bob as he kicked the door open angrily. "I thought Asians are supposed to be good at cooking, dammit."

「這是我們的臥室。」鮑伯帶著阿梅走上樓梯，抵達了二樓。二樓的空間比一樓還窄，房間放了雙人床後就幾乎不剩什麼空間了。

「你看～這是我之前的妻子用的梳妝台。現在是你的了！喜歡嗎？」鮑伯指著一個被白蟻蛀得坑坑洞洞的梳妝台，並用著深不可測的表情問道。阿梅雖然聽不懂鮑伯說的英語，卻可以用肢體語言猜出他大概在說些什麼。阿梅勉強的露出微笑，卻難掩她在眼裡打轉的淚水。

 "This will be our bedroom," said Bob Summerton as Mai followed him up the narrow flight of squeaky, wooden stairs, dragging her cumbersome suitcase behind. The small bedroom on the second floor of the house could barely fit a double bed.

"Look! This is the dressing table my late wife used to use. Now it's all yours. Do you like it?" asked Bob with the unfathomable smile still on his face whilst pointing to a dilapidated, termite-bitten dressing table squeezed into the far end of the room. 

Without any knowledge of the English language, Mai was unable to understand what Bob was saying, but could just about guess their meaning by observing closely his body language and gestures. In reply to his query, Mai put on her forced smile and nodded, trying to stop her tears from trickling down her cheek.

婚禮結束後，阿梅和鮑伯便趕到火車站，準備搭火車前往鮑伯的家～德拉威爾州。阿梅的父母及弟弟也陪同一起前往火車站。火車進站時，阿梅強顏歡笑的和家人道別。阿梅的弟弟阿成先開始哭了起來，她爸爸也將頭撇到另一邊去，偷偷擦拭著眼淚。就連阿梅嚴厲的媽媽都強忍著淚水，對阿梅叮囑道：「別忘了要當一個溫順的好妻子！」

整個旅途，阿梅都沒有掉一滴眼淚。在火車震耳欲聾的鳴笛聲中，阿梅心想：「為了我的孩子，我必須堅強。」阿梅回憶著過去，絲毫沒有注意到黃昏已悄悄逼近。

 Shortly after their wedding, the newly wedded couple arrived at the train station to take the train to Delaware, where the latter lived. Mai's parents and her little brother Thanh also accompanied them to the station. When their train arrived, Mai wore a forced smile on her face and waved goodbye to her parents. First, her brother started sobbing, then her father also looked away to hide his tears. Even Mai's stern mother nearly broke down in sorrow, but she forced back her tears and shouted amidst the crowd. "Don't forget to be a submissive, obedient wife!" 

During the whole journey, Mai did not let a single drop of tear trickle down her face. "I have to stay strong for my child," Mai thought to herself as the whistle of the train's steam engine drowned the voices of other passengers on the train, signaling their departure. Fixating on the rolling hills and mountainside outside the window, Mai was so immersed in her own thoughts of home and the bygone days, which seemed so far away, such that she did not notice the blood red sun slowly setting in the far horizon, casting long, dark shadows over the trees and mountains.

阿梅發現自己懷孕了的隔天，她母親一大早就把她叫醒了。

「阿梅，趕緊給我起床洗漱！」阿梅的媽媽說。「今天，我們要帶你去見夏摩藤先生，就是你未來的丈夫。妳得給我好好梳妝打扮，記得要展現自己最美的一面。」

阿梅之前計畫要盡可能的拖延他與未來丈夫的見面日。然而，當她發現自己懷孕後，反而想要盡快結婚，這樣才不會被父母發現。

「如果我媽發現我懷上了阿雄的孩子，一定會叫我把孩子拿掉的！」阿梅心想。「我得盡我所能來保護我的小孩，就算是嫁給一個陌生人，我都願意。」

於是，阿梅穿上她最美的洋裝，並化了濃妝來掩飾自己因徹夜哭泣而形成的紅腫雙眼及淚痕。在城裡的咖啡廳，阿梅終於和未來的丈夫見面了。夏摩藤先生是一個半禿頭的中年男子，他的年齡甚至比阿梅的爸爸還略大幾歲。他從事工地工人的職業，曾經結過一次婚，但沒有子女。

「你好啊！我叫鮑伯。你叫什麼名字？」夏摩藤先生和阿梅握手時問道。

「我叫阿梅。你好嗎？」阿梅用著她會唯一會的一句英語答道。

「我很好！阿梅，你好漂亮啊！」夏摩騰先生讚美的。

「您瞧～他們簡直是天生一對的！」仲介在一旁和阿梅的父母說，兩人也點頭表示贊同。

The following morning after Mai discovered that she was pregnant, her mother woke her up really early. 

"Mai, wake up and get dressed," said Mai's mother in her usual commanding tone. "Today, you are meeting Mr Summerton, the gentleman whom you will marry. Put on your best dress. Don't forget that you need to make a good first impression." 

Mai's original plan was to postpone this meeting to as late as possible so that she could have more time to recover mentally from the loss of Hung. Nonetheless, now that she had discovered her own pregnancy, she was instead eager to marry Mr Summerton as soon as possible, before her parents find out. 

"If mother finds out that I'm pregnant with Hung's child, she would definitely force me to get rid of the baby," thought Mai to herself. "I must do all I can to protect our baby, even if it means sacrificing myself to marry someone whom I dislike, as it is the only piece of remnant that symbolizes our love."

Therefore, Mai acted like a good, obedient child and obeyed her mother's words. She put on her best dress, which was her eighteenth birthday present her father had given her, and put on some makeup in order to hide her swollen eyes and tear marks from all the crying from the previous night. In a café in the Bronx, Mai and her parents met Mr Summerton, who was a middle-aged balding man several years older than Mai's father. He was a construction worker who had been married once already with no children. 

"Hello, my name's Bob. What's your name?" enquired Mr Summerton as he shook Mai's hand. 

"My name is Mai. How are you?" said Mai in English, the only phrase she knew in the language. 

"I'm great, thanks. Nice to meet you Mai! You look beautiful!" smiled Mr Summerton warmly. 

"Seems like they're destined for each other," whispered the broker to Mai's parents, who nodded in agreement.

得知了阿雄的死訊後，阿梅整個人都精神崩潰了。她將自己鎖在房間裡一天一夜後，終於做出了決定。

「既然阿雄已經不在了，我更沒有理由待在這座悲情城市了。」阿梅擦乾眼淚後心想。「我得做好我做女兒的義務，就是聽從父母的安排。我必須做一個好姊姊，把弟弟的將來放在第一位。」

於是，阿梅同意她父母的安排，嫁給一個美國的工地工人～夏摩藤先生，如此一來，他們全家便能搬到美國，順利重新展開新的生活。

經過了兩次轉機（一次在台北，一次在洛杉磯），他們終於抵達了紐約市。走出機場航廈時，映入眼簾的場景是紐約絢麗的天際線。阿梅目瞪口呆地遠眺著摩天大樓林立的市中心，其中最為顯眼的高樓是帝國大廈，以及當時尚在興建中的世貿雙子星。這些場景對阿梅來說非常新鮮，讓她暫時不再那麼消沈，對未來也開始抱著些許希望。然而，阿梅對此心情感到愧疚，心裡想著：「要是阿雄跟我一起在這就好了。」

 After learning about Hung's death, Mai was absolutely devastated. After locking herself in her room for a day, she finally came to a conclusion. 

"Now that Hung is no longer here, I have no more reason to stay in this sad city," thought Mai to herself as her tears started to dry up. "Instead, I should perform the duties of a good daughter and obey my parents' words. I should be a good elder sister and put my little brother's future first before my own." 

Therefore, Mai agreed to follow her parents' arrangements for her and marry Mr. Summerton, an American construction worker, so that their family can move to America and start a brand new life there. 

After a long haul flight consisting of two transits in Taipei and Los Angeles, they finally arrived at the airport in New York city exactly two months after Vinh's visit. As they left the airport's terminal, Mai stared in awe at New York's glamorous skyline consisting of numerous modern and symbolic skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building, as well as the World Trade Center twin towers that were still under construction at the time. The unprecedented experience was so special to Mai such that she gradually began to feel less depressed and more hopeful towards her future. Nevertheless, Mai felt extremely guilty about her emotions and quietly thought to herself: "I wish Hung is here with me."

Despite her parents' strong opposition, Mai had been secretly meeting up with Hung every week since that argument. After some time, they both confirmed that their love for each other was absolutely earnest and definitely not merely "a childish fancy" as Mai's father called it.

Everyday, Mai's father would read the newspaper, which only confirmed his earlier conjectures that the Americans seemed to be losing and the situation continued to exacerbate as the Viet Cong became ever more threatening by the day.

阿梅興高采烈地回家後，發現父母在家裡等著她。

「母親，我有一件事要告訴您。」阿梅將菜籃放在地上後說。

「我們也有事要同你說。」阿梅的媽媽說。「聽好了，是很重要的事。」

「我們打算全家移民美國。」阿梅的爸爸接著說。「這裡的情況一天比一天糟糕，看來越共遲早會贏得戰爭並奪得政權。」

阿梅聽完後，震驚到不知道要說什麼。

「可⋯⋯可是為何如此突然呢？那我們這裡的房子，還有爺爺奶奶怎麼辦呢？」阿梅回覆道。

「我們的房子暫時空著沒關係。」阿梅的爸爸說。「我們三人先移民，等到拿到居留權後，再接妳爺爺奶奶過去。」

「可是，我們要怎麼拿到居留權呢？」阿梅問道。

「我們打算安排妳嫁給一個美國人，這樣我和你父親透過妳就可以拿到居留權。」阿梅的媽媽說。「我們剛剛跟仲介談過了。仲介是我娘家那邊的人，他人很好，很樂意幫助我們。」

 After Mai finished with her shopping, she returned home with a cheerful spirit. Her parents were at home to wait for her return. 

"Mother, I have something to tell you," said Mai as she placed her basket on the floor and took off her conical hat. 

"Well, we also have something to tell you, my girl," replied Mai's mother. "Listen carefully, as it is very important."

"Mai, we will be immigrating to America soon as a family," said Mai's father. "The situation here is getting worse by the day and it seems like the Viet Cong will win the war sooner or later."

Mai was so shocked to hear the news that she didn't know what to respond.

"But...but why so sudden?" Only after a few minutes did everything begin to sink in and only then did Mai venture to speak. "How about our house here, and my grandparents?"

"We can leave our house unoccupied for the time being," answered Mai's father. "We will move to America first, and when we have obtained citizenship, we will bring your grandparents over with us."

"But...how do we get citizenship there?" enquired Mai, who was devastated as she immediately thought of Hung. 

"We plan to let you marry an American man, so our family can gain citizenship through your marriage," responded Mai's mother. "We have just communicated with a broker, who is a relative of my mother, and he has very kindly agreed to help us."

他們一行人從地下室上來後，赫然發現老太太就坐在客廳的維多利亞沙發上，用著嚴厲的眼神看著他們。

「外⋯⋯外婆！我⋯⋯我還以為您去睡覺了呢！」阿桃支支吾吾地說。

「看來，必須揭開這個我原本決定要帶進墳墓的秘密，才能幫助你們破案。」老太太嘆氣道。「好吧！你們坐好，聽我娓娓道來，就當作是床邊故事吧！這是一個富裕商人的女兒愛上貧窮的工地工人的愛情故事。」

大家趕緊去餐廳搬了幾張椅子近來，並圍著老太太，仔細聆聽。

After the group of friends ascended from the basement into the living room, they were extremely astonished to discover grandmother Mai sitting on the Victorian coach, with her arms crossed and a stern expression on her wrinkled face.

"Grandmother! I...I thought you've...gone to bed already!" exclaimed Thao, without concealing her fear of her grandmother. 

"I have heard of your plan and have pretended to go to bed early," responded grandmother Mai. "Do not try to deceive me as I know everything that is going on in this house."

"I...I'm really sorry," apologized Thao. "I didn't want to deceive you, I just don't wanna make you angry."

"It seems like without revealing my secret, which I have hitherto been determined to take with me to my very grave, would make the continuation of your investigations quite impossible," said the elderly lady. "Okay, please take a seat if you would like to hear me out. I will tell you a bedtime story: The story of a wealthy merchant's daughter who fell in love with a poor construction worker."

The group of friends each grabbed a chair from the adjoining dining room and gathered around the old lady to listen to what she had to say regarding the mysterious pendant necklace and the cremation pot, which they discovered in the basement.

After reaching the end of the flight of stone steps, they arrived at a wooden door, engraved in a stone wall, with a rusty bolt lock. 

After opening the door, the group entered a poorly illuminated room. Despite the fact that, by then, their eyes were already quite accustomed to the darkness, they still struggled to see clearly. In the darkness, Tiffany bumped into the cold, stone wall.

"Ouch!" Tiffany screamed.

他們猛然回頭一望，發現女僕阿花就在身後偷窺著大家。

「阿桃，你可以幫我們翻譯嗎？我們想問問女僕一些事兒。」孝恩說。

阿桃不耐煩地叫了女僕的名字：「阿花，妳過來！」

「請問你最近有在這間房子裡遇到什麼不尋常的事兒嗎？」孝恩問道。

「白天時一切都正常，」女僕阿花答道，並經由阿桃翻譯給大家聽。「可是，晚上就不同了。每晚，我都做有關戰爭的惡夢。當我晚上想起來上廁所時，都無法動彈。好像有人把我壓在床上。」

「這是何時開始的？是如同老太太說的，大約一個月前嗎？」傑佛瑞問道。

「我⋯⋯我不清楚！」阿花低著頭說。孝恩一看就知道女僕有所隱瞞。

「請你一定要說出真相，」孝恩說。「如果妳有所隱瞞，只會讓我們更難解決案件！」

「我⋯⋯我不敢說出真話。我怕我會被責罰！」女僕看著老太太說。

「別擔心，我們不會責怪你的！」阿桃說。「我們只想知道真相。」

「是的，事情大約是在一個月前開始發生的。」女僕猶豫了一下後說。

「你為什麼覺得說出實情會被責罰呢？你是不是知道這些事情的起因？」布萊問道。

「其實，這都是我的錯！有天，我在地下室打掃時，不小心打翻了一個白色罈子。」阿花解釋道。「自從那件事情後，詭異的事情就接二連三的發生。」

They quickly turned around only to catch a glimpse of Hoa, the maid, again. 

"Could you please translate for us, Thao? We need to ask the maid something," said Shaun.

Thao called Hoa's name impatiently, and the maid appeared in front of them, with a crooked smile on her face. 

"Did you encounter anything unusual in this house for the past few weeks?" interrogated Shaun. 

"Everything seemed normal at day," replied Hoa as her eyes looked searchingly at everyone, which was translated into English by Thao. "But things get scary at night. Every night, I have terrible nightmares of wars. And at night when I need to use the toilet, I could not get up. I felt like someone was pressing me down on my bed." Shaun and Jeffrey exchanged glances.

"When did all this start to happen? Is it about a month ago, as stated by Mrs. Mai?" enquired Jeffrey.

"I don't know," responded Hoa quickly whilst looking straight down at her bare feet. Shaun immediately sensed that Hoa was not revealing the entire truth. 

"Ms. Hoa, please speak the truth," said Shaun. "If you lie, you'll only make our job more difficult."

"I....I dare not speak the truth, as I may get into trouble," said Hoa as she glanced at Thao.

"Don't worry, we won't reproach you," promised Thao. "We just want to know the truth, that's all!"

"Yes, it was about a month ago that these strange encounters started to occur," proceeded Hoa hesitantly. 

"Why did you think you'd get in trouble for saying the truth? Do you know about the origin of these mysteries?" interrogated Blythe.

"It....it must've been my fault. I was cleaning the basement that day when I accidentally knocked over a pot," elucidated Hoa. "I must've affected the feng shui of this house or something, because from then on, these strange things have never ceased to occur."

抵達胡志明市的隔天一早，阿桃便開著車帶著大家去觀光。經過了一天的觀光行程，大夥兒在天黑前回到阿桃家吃晚餐。他們一回到那間別墅，便發現又開始刮起了詭異的強風，天空瞬間變得烏雲密佈。

「今天天氣真奇怪！」孝恩若有所思的說。「今天早上還晴空萬里的，怎麼瞬間就要下暴風雨的感覺了呢？」

「我跟你說過N次了，這不是暴風雨，是普通的雨！這裡的雨季就是這樣，雨都是毫無預警的說來就來。」阿桃不耐煩地說。

「這就怪了！」傑佛瑞說。「我手機上顯示只有30%的降雨機率，怎麼會下雨呢？」

「因為胡志明市的面積很大，比倫敦還大好幾倍，所以各個地區都不太一樣，很難準確的預測！」阿桃答道。「咱們趕緊進屋吧！就快下雨了！」

果不其然，他們進屋沒多久、準備享用晚餐時，便聽到雨滴重重地打在窗戶玻璃的聲音。

「你們真幸運！」阿桃說。「我外婆今天罕見地親自下廚，特別為大家準備了一桌的傳統越式料理。」

「這是為我昨天無理的舉止道歉，」阿梅婆婆說。「因為某些誤會，我失去了理智。來～別客氣，儘管吃！」

「哇！看起來好好吃喔！」傑佛瑞讚美道。

「這世上沒有什麼比阿嬤親手做的料理更好吃的了！」布萊想到了自己遠在台灣的外婆後，有感而發地說。這次，連蒂芬尼都不敢抱怨了！

The following morning, Thao drove the friends down town to have a city tour.  After a long day of city touring, the group of friends returned to Thao's home just in time for dinner. As they entered the garden of the isolated manor, strong gusts of wind started to blow in their direction just like the day before. Covering the slowly sinking sun in the distant horizon, clouds started to gather in around them.

"This is such strange weather," remarked Shaun pensively. "It was such a bright sunny day this morning, and now it feels like there's going to be a thunderstorm."

"I told you before, this isn't a thunderstorm, it's just normal rain during the rainy season," responded Thao impatiently.

"That's odd," answered Jeffrey. "On my phone, it says that the city is sunny with only 30% chance of rain. How come it's about to rain here."

"That's because Ho Chi Minh city is very large, about the size of London. So, often it rains in certain districts but not others," responded Thao. "Let's hurry inside, it looks like it'll rain anytime."

Thao was right again. The moment they sat down at the dinner table, which was filled with traditional Vietnamese delicacies, rain started to pelter down. 

"You guys are in luck," said Thao. "Grandmother has decided to cook today, which is a very rare occasion."

"This is to say sorry for being so rude yesterday," said grandmother Mai. "I lost my mind after some trivial misunderstanding and couldn't keep my prejudices to myself. Don't be shy! Eat as much as you can! There's plenty of food."

"Wow! This looks so delicious," admired Jeffrey. 

"There's nothing better than grandma's homemade dishes," said Blythe as she observed the old lady's expression. Even Tiffany dared not complain this time.

阿桃領著布萊和蒂芬尼爬上樓梯，他們的房間在頂樓。映入眼簾的是一間摩登的臥室，裡面放著雙人床、衣櫥及鏡子，地上的地毯也與窗簾同一色調。房間的牆壁都塗成了淡藍色，有著一種彷彿置身海邊一般清涼的感覺。蒂芬尼看到床後立刻跳了上去。

「你們好好休息吧！」阿桃說。「如果需要什麼，我在樓下。」

「這房間好漂亮喔！」布萊讚美道。「真謝謝你讓我們住在這⋯⋯」布萊轉頭才發現阿桃早已轉身離去了。

「蒂芬尼姊姊，看來阿桃已經視妳為情敵了。」布萊說。

「誰理她呀？我有自信小傑一定會選擇我的！」蒂芬尼答道。

 Thao motioned for Tiffany and Blythe to follow her up the stairs as she showed them their room, which was situated on the topmost floor of the house. As they entered their room, what came rolling into view was a comfortable, modernly furnished room with a double bed, wardrobe and mirrors. The color of the little rug on the floor perfectly matched the color of the curtains. The walls of the room was painted in an elegantly light blue color that gave the air of being at the beach. Tiffany leapt onto the bed the moment she perceived it. 

"I’ll let you unpack your things and get prepared for bed," said Thao. "If you need anything, I’ll be downstairs."

"This room is lovely, Thao," answered Blythe, glancing around the room. "Thanks so much for your hospitality, it’s great….." As Blythe turned around, she perceived that Thao has already left the room, without saying goodbye.

"Looks like you've got yourself a love rival, Tiffany," said Blythe.

"Who gives a damn about that crazy Cow?" responded Tiffany. "I'm certain ma Jeffie would choose me over her any day!"

如同阿桃預言的一樣，當大夥兒換上拖鞋、走上臺階來到客廳時，外面就開始下起了滂薄大雨。客廳裡的陳設格外地古典，裡面放著維多利亞式的傢俱，腳底下還有一片豪華的波斯地毯。一進到客廳裡，孝恩和傑佛瑞便對看了一眼，表示兩人都察覺到了不對敬之處。

「歡迎回家！」阿桃的媽媽～阿蘭說。「你還帶了朋友回來。」

「他們不是我朋友，」阿桃答道。「這是我之前跟妳提起的超自然現象的名神探～傑佛瑞・多諾溫先生和他的助理～孝恩。這是布萊，孝恩來自台灣的表妹；還有黛芬尼，不知道哪裡冒出來的路人甲。」

正當蒂芬尼正怒氣沖沖地要糾正阿桃，說自己不叫『黛芬尼』、也不是『路人甲』時，她被傑佛瑞打斷了。

「阮太太您好，我是傑佛瑞。這是我的搭檔孝恩，」傑佛瑞自我介紹道。「您的英與說得真好啊！」

「雖然我是越南人，但是我在每過出生及成長的！」阮太太答道。

 Exactly like Thao had predicted, soon after they changed into slippers and walked up a flight of stairs into the living room, large drops of rain began to splatter violently on the windowpanes. They entered a medium-sized living room furnished with Victorian-style furniture with a luxurious carpet beneath their feet. Shaun and Jeffrey exchanged glances, signifying that they both sensed something unusual about this isolated mansion.

Sitting on the Victorian sofa was a middle-aged lady in a bright green dress. Immediately when she perceived Thao, the woman's eyes brightened and she rose up to embrace her. 

"Welcome home, my dear," said the woman in English with an American accent, who was in fact Thao's mother. "I see that you've brought your friends along."

"Yes, mom," replied Thao. "This is Jeffrey and Shaun, the supernatural detectives I told you about, who are here to investigate about the things you told me. This is Blythe - Shaun's Taiwanese cousin and Daphne, some random girl who came along for no reason."

Just when Tiffany was about to declare that her name is not Daphne and she is not "a random girl", she was interrupted by Jeffrey. 

"Nice to meet you, Mrs Nguyen. I'm Jeffrey and this is my friend Shaun," said Jeffrey. "You speak English very well, Mrs Nguyen!"

"Yes, although I'm Vietnamese, I was born and raised in New York!" responded Mrs Nguyen.

他們從機場的停車場離開，朝市區的方向行駛。快抵達市區時，就開始塞車了。

「天哪～你到底會不會開車呀！」他們卡在原地15分鐘後，蒂芬尼罵道。「我們卡在這裡美叮美噹已經一萬年了！」

「蒂芬尼，不要再無理取鬧了！這又不是阿桃的錯！」坐在副駕的傑佛瑞跳出來幫阿桃聲援。「你看看這堵車情況，我看這根本就是停車場了！」

「因為這幾年越南的經濟蓬勃發展，愈來愈多人有錢買車，所以路上幾乎天天塞車，」阿桃解釋道。

「那我們傻嘛？既然天天塞車，幹嘛不坐地鐵啊？」蒂芬尼抱怨道。

「根據我之前搜尋過的資料顯示，目前胡志明市尚未有地鐵系統，第一條地鐵線尚在興建中。所以沒辦法，我們往返機場只能請阿桃開車接送。」布萊答道。

「吼～我看我下車自己走還比較快！」蒂芬尼嘟著嘴說。

After they drove out of the airport parking lot and entered the city centre, they soon found themselves stuck in the middle of a traffic jam. 

"OMG! Do you even know how to drive!" screamed Tiffany from the back seat after the car barely moved a yard in fifteen minutes. "We've legit been stuck in this place forever!"

"Tiffany, it's not Thao's fault," said Jeffrey, who was sitting next to Thao. "Look at this traffic! This looks more like a parking lot than a road to me!"

"Indeed, due to the economic boom of Vietnam in recent years, more and more people are rich enough to afford a car, which is what's causing such terrible traffic jams every day," explained Thao.

"Are you crazy? Why do you have to drive then? We could've boarded the subway or something!" complained Tiffany. 

"There is no mass rapid transit, aka subway, system in Ho Chi Minh City according to the internet, although a subway line is currently under construction," responded Blythe. "So, I guess there's no other way!"

"I reckon it'll be quicker if I just get off and walk!" grumbled Tiffany.

經過了約莫12小時的飛行時間，大夥兒終於抵達了胡志明市新山一國際機場。比他們早出發的阿桃已經在機場等候，準備接機。

「我叫阿桃。」阿桃用斜眼看著布萊說。

「阿桃？你的名字好奇怪喔！妳爸媽是不是特別喜歡吃桃子呀？」蒂芬尼將阿桃從頭到腳打量了一番。

「哼～不懂就別亂說！阿桃這個名字在越南很常見，它代表了有禮貌和恭敬的意思。」阿桃答道。

「那顯然你父母給你取錯名字了！因為你不僅沒禮貌又不懂地尊重人。」蒂芬尼翻著白眼說。

「唉唷，你們要相親相愛，別一見面就吵架嘛！」孝恩說。

「閉嘴，書呆子！」蒂芬尼和阿桃異口同聲地說。說畢，兩人便互瞪了一眼對方。

「小傑，我們走吧！不要理那瘋婆子。我的車停在那兒！」阿桃摟著傑佛瑞的手說。

「你這臭三八好大的膽子，『小傑』是你叫的嗎？那是我給他取的專屬綽號誒！」蒂芬尼氣得破口大罵道。

「蒂芬尼姊姊，如果妳要贏得最終的勝利，你必須保持冷靜。沒有人會喜歡潑婦的，」布萊小聲地說。「別擔心，我絕對是站在妳這邊的！」

After around thirteen hours of flight time, the group of friends finally arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Thao, who had arrived earlier on a different flight, was at the airport to pick them up. 

"Nice to meet you, I'm Blythe, Shaun's cousin," said Blythe politely as she extended her hand towards Thao. 

"I'm Thao," replied Thao coolly as she reluctantly shook Blythe's hand. 

"So you are Cow!" exclaimed Tiffany after scrutinizing the girl from head to toe. "What a weird name you've got! Do your parents like to drink milk or something?"

"No, my name is 'Thao' not 'Cow', it means 'courteous' and 'respectful' in Vietnamese," answered Thao proudly. 

"Well, looks like your parents gave you the wrong name, cuz you're both uncourteous and disrespectful," responded Tiffany, rolling her eyes. 

"There, there, quit fighting and be nice to each other!" said Shaun. 

"Shut up, nerd!" screamed Tiffany and Thao in one voice, then they glared at each other angrily and both turned away.

"Jeffie, let's go! My car's over there." said Thao as she touched Jeffrey's arm affectionately. 

"Hey, how dare you call him 'Jeffie'! Only I can call him that! That's my special name for him!" shouted Tiffany madly as she waved her hands about.

"Tiffany, if you want to win this game, you've got to chill! No one likes a name-calling eccentric woman,"  whispered Blythe secretly. "But, don't worry, you've got me on your side."

半小時過後，孝恩、傑佛瑞和阿桃三人便約在外面的咖啡廳討論案子。

「你知道嗎？經過了一番調查，我發現那篇部落格的版主了。你猜是誰呀？」孝恩故意問道。

「好啦，我老實招了，那個網站是我經營的！」傑佛瑞說。「可是，裡面寫的除了你是我的助理這段全部都是事實啊！我這麼寫只是為了達到效果，提升點閱率罷了！你既然會介意，我就把那部份改掉不就得了！可是，你是怎麼發現的？」

「這並非難事，」孝恩答道。「這世上除了咱倆能這麼詳細地記錄所有的案子別無他人。還有，作者的筆名JD就是你名字的縮寫啊！你既然要匿名，也想個比較不容易被發現的嘛！」

「好啦，我很抱歉！」傑佛瑞說。「總之，我們先聊聊這次的案子吧！美女，你叫什麼名字啊？」

「我叫阿桃！自從讀過了你的部落格後，我一直想見一見傳說中的名偵探。今天算是美夢成真了！多諾溫先生，想不到，你比想像中更帥呢！」阿桃用著別於之前和孝恩說話的語氣說。

「請叫我阿傑就好！」傑佛瑞臉紅的說。「你可以跟我們陳述一下你遇到的超自然現象嗎？」

「其實不是我親身經歷的，是我遠在越南胡志明市的家人所遇到的事情⋯⋯」於是，阿桃便開始陳述了一番整件事情的來龍去脈。

聽完了阿桃的解釋後，兩名偵探都個別同意要接起這件案子，然而，兩人有著不同的原因。傑佛瑞會同意是因為『阿桃實在太辣了！』，而孝恩則是因為對這起案件非常感興趣。

After half an hour, Jeffrey arrived at Shaun's office and the three people sat down with a coffee in the common room to discuss about their case. 

"Guess what, Jeff? I found out the author of that blog. Would you like to know?" asked Shaun sarcastically.

"Fine, I plead guilty. I wrote that blog, ok?" replied Jeff. "Everything else apart from the part about you being my assistant is true. That was only for effect so people will be intrigued. Fine, I'll update it to correct everything, happy? But how did you find out it was me?"

"Well, this isn't rocket science," answered Shaun. "The only person that could've known so much detail about our cases are the two of us. And I didn't write it, so it must be you. Simple! Furthermore, the author's name, John Davis has the same initials as you. If you're trying to conceal your identity, at least make an effort to make it less obvious!"

"Whatever! I'm sorry, ok?" said Jeffrey unapologetically. "Anyways, we shouldn't keep this lovely lady waiting. What's your name?"

"I'm Thao! I've been wanting to meet you after reading that blog and my dream actually came true! OMG, I can't believe I'm actually talking to the great detective Mr Donovan," answered Thao in such a different attitude than what she showed towards Shaun that made the latter quite speechless.

"Please, just call me Jeff," responded Jeff as he gave Shaun the 'dayum-she's-hot-look'. "What is that you'd like to consult us about?"

"Actually, my family back home has been encountering some unexplainable supernatural mystery recently, and I was wondering if you could help me?" replied Thao. "It's happening in my house in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam....."  

After Thao had explained her family's encounters, both detectives agreed to help her solve the mystery, however with different reasons of their own. Jeffrey agreed because "Thao's too hot to refuse" to put it in his own words, and Shaun agreed because he was extremely curious about the mystery.

一個多雲的春天下午，李孝恩正一個人在實驗室裡分析數據；突然，有人敲了敲門。孝恩回頭一看，竟驚見一位身著綠色迷你裙、露臂裝，並且濃妝豔抹，染著一頭金髮的亞裔女大生出現在實驗室門口。

「你就是李孝恩吧？」女子問道。

「是的，」孝恩看著數據說。「妳是我輔導課的學生吧？我有說過，如果要交作業的話，請直接放在我的檔案櫃裡就好，不用親自繳交。」

「我看起來像是物理系的學生嗎？」女子翻著白眼說。「我的名字叫阿桃，我是大一的人類學系的學生。我是來找你老闆的！」

「我的老闆？不好意思，我聽不太懂你的意思。」孝恩一頭霧水地答道。「如果你指的是我的指導教授的話，他現在出差去了。只是我不懂，人類學系的學生要找物理教授做什麼？」

「吼～你是裝傻還是真傻呀？難怪你永遠只能當助理。」阿桃不耐煩地說。「我是要找你的老闆～傑佛瑞・多諾溫先生的。他不是一位專門解決超自然現象的名偵探嗎？我剛好遇到了一件事情要來請教他。你懂了嗎？」

「這樣我明白了！」孝恩說。「沒錯，我和傑佛瑞確實是搭檔，一起解決超自然現象的偵探小組。可是，我不是他的助理，他也不是我的老闆。我們是平等的合夥人關係，我們是一起辦案的。我不理解你是怎麼認為我是助理，還是因為我是亞洲人你就覺得我理應當他的助理。如果真是如此，我為你感到慚愧，你自己身為亞裔不該有如此的偏見。總之，傑佛瑞現在在博物館工作，你有什麼問題告訴我也是一樣的。我們都一起辦案，所以會互相分享情報。」

「哼～我才不信呢！你瞧，這篇部落格不都寫得清清楚楚嗎？」阿桃滑開手機，找出一個部落格網站說。網站上詳細地記載了神探們所有經手過的案子，從一開始的『鬼武士的復仇』到近期的『台北愛情故事』全部都有記載。然而，這個網站偏頗地誇大了傑佛瑞的角色與破案的貢獻。」

「我不知道這篇博客的作者是誰，但這裡面寫的內容並非全屬事實。」孝恩聳了聳肩說。

「我不管，我就是要找多諾溫先生。」阿桃答道。

One cloudy spring afternoon, Shaun Lee was working alone on analyzing data for his experiment in his office. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door and entered an Asian woman wearing a green mini skirt, red camisole, and with heavy make-up and dyed golden hair in a braid. 

"Are you Shaun Lee?" enquired the woman.

"Yes, I am," replied Shaun, who barely looked up from his work. "Are you one of my tutorial students? If you're handing in your solutions to problem sheets, just drop them in my pigeon hole. No need to visit my office personally."

"No, excuse me! Do I look like a physics student?" answered the woman, rolling her eyes. "I'm Thao, a first year anthropology student. I'm here to consult your boss."

"My boss? I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean," responded the bewildered Shaun. "If you mean my supervisor, he's currently away on a trip. But I don't understand why an anthropology student would want to consult my supervisor."

"Are you stupid or something? Do I have to spell everything out? No wonder you're only the assistant!" snapped Thao irritably. "Look, I know that you and your boss - Mr. Jeffrey Donovan are working as detectives to solve supernatural mysteries. I happen to be encountering a mystery myself and would like to consult your boss. Get it, nerd?"

"Okay, I see where you're going, but I need to get some things straight," said Shaun. "Yes, Jeffrey and I are indeed working as amateur supernatural detectives but no, Jeffrey is not my boss nor I his assistant. We're partners and we work together to solve the mysteries. I don't know how you got the impression that I'm his assistant, if it's because I'm Asian so I must be the assistant, then shame on you, because you're Asian too, so you should know better than to have such prejudices! But anyways, Jeffrey is currently working in a museum, so it's the same if you let me know what your problem is."

"I don't believe you! This blog here says it all! See?" said Thao as she showed Shaun a blog on her phone that writes about all the details of all the cases the detectives had solved, right at the beginning from "Revenge of the Ghost Samurais" to the latest case "Taipei Love Story". However, the blog had a biased viewpoint that shaped Jeffrey as the genius detective that solved all the cases with minor help from his assistant Shaun.

"Well, I don't know who wrote this blog but this isn't true," shrugged Shaun.

"I don't care! I insist on seeing Mr. Jeffrey Donovan," insisted Thao.
